Many electromagnetic coils have a magnetic body core, a piece of ferromagnetic similar material with iron in the center, thus increasing the magnetic field. The current through the coil magnetizes the iron and increases the magnetic field of the magnetized material to that produced by the wire. This is called a ferromagnetic core or iron core coil.
